Percy Jackson & The Olympians Movie Review

Once again, one of my favorite novels has been bastardized by Hollywood – and for no good reason at that. It seems that every director out there thinks he is Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) and can do whatever the hell they want with no concern for the fans – and instead try to stroke their own egos by making it their own. That being said, if you have never read the books you will enjoy this movie. Logan Lerman, who plays Percy, does a fantastic job of catching that characters personality and Kevin Kidd as Poseidon was a great choice, along with Pierce Brosnan as Chiron/Mr. Brunner. That is why I do not understand why the story did not stay closer to the story in the books. All the elements were there: a great cast, top-notch budget, the right demographic and the book was practically written for the big screen. The thing that really did not make sense was the vital characters that were missing from the movie. There was no sign of Clarisse (the daughter of Ares), one of my favorite characters in the book. Ares was nowhere to be seen, not even a cameo on Mount Olympus and he was the main antagonist of Percy in the books and had an epic fight with Percy at the end of the first book. I was really looking forward to that in the movie but instead we get a totally fabricated battle between Percy and Luke. The only saving grace storywise, was the scene were Percy fought the Minotaur, that was one of my favorite scenes in the book and that played out exactly how it did in the movie. Unfortunately, it was at the beginning of story and got my expectations up for the rest of the movie. Maybe this is why Chris Columbus did not do any more Harry Potter movies. The fault has to fall squarely on the people making the movie and not the absolutely amazing cast. If the rumors on the internet are true, Logan Lerman may be in the running to be Peter Parker in the Spider-Man reboot. Personally, I think that would be a good thing. Good job kid.

What did you think of the movie and do you think Logan Lerman could pull off Peter Parker?
