Cryptic’s New Star Trek MMO… Boldly Going Nowhere

I’ve had Star Trek Online MMORPG from Cryptic Studios now for a week and I’ve already canceled my free 30 day subscription. The game was awful! Age of Conan was more finished. Cryptic has once again put out yet another unfinished game that leaves you feeling like your part of some beta test. First, it took me literally hours to download and install all of the patches that didn’t get included on the disc. HOURS. It’s not that my connection was slow, I’ve read the same on the internet from other people installing the game. You guys couldn’t wait to put out a finished product? Sure, I complain about when SW:TOR will come out, but at least I know they aren’t just crapping out another bomb that would barely appeal to games ten years ago. The ground missions are sluggish and cheap (much like the check CBS wrote to support the franchise). The Starship encounters have potential, but after a few hours, you begin to realize that you’ve played the same missions over with just different skins. Kinda like the planet missions in Mass Effect. What the @#&?!? Cryptic, how much fail does it take for you people to get the message?!? Potentially this could’ve been to Trekkers what W.o.W. is to general geekdom. And it’s pretty bad when you know the product sucks so bad that you try to get as money upfront as you can with lifetime and one year memberships. All of the diehard Trekkie fans have probably signed up for the lifetime membership, but my hell – how hard is that to accomplish? Those are the same people that didn’t like the Abrahms reboot of the franchise. If you were aiming for a customer base that thinks speaking Klingon goes on a job application and that 40 Year Old Virgin was a documentary, then job well done. How hard is it to understand that diehard fans will buy almost anything with the name on it, but the real money is luring the casual fan? Like me. I’m a Star Wars fan first and foremost, but I enjoyed watching Star Trek on TV and the silver screen. Congrats Cryptic, you have successfully alienated an entire generation from playing Star Trek Online and possibly any game with your name on it. If you’re looking for a good space fairing MMO try EVE or wait till Star Wars: The Old Republic comes out in 2011. Don’t waste the hours it takes to install and download the updates for this subpar game. Not to mention wasting your money.
