New Trailer for the Karate Kid Remake Hits

I want to hate this movie so bad. Over the course of my childhood, I’ve worn out three VHS tapes of the original movie. Heck, I even liked the two sequels (but we don’t talk about the crap that was the fourth movie in our house…). I mean, how dare Hollywood destroy another piece of my childhood?!? But, damn if I won’t take my kids to see this one. Jackie Chan looks the part and Jaden Smith has about the same acting range as Ralph Macchio. In this remake, Dre (Smith) and his mother move to China and encounter the same problems that Daniel had in the original movie. Chan takes Dre under his wing and teaches the same way that Pat Morita did: taking everyday motions and translating them into martial art moves. My only sticking point is that karate came over to Japan from mainland Korea/China and was based on a combination of tae-kwon-do and kung-fu. Blossoming from the small Japanese island of Okinawa, karate is primarily considered a wholly Japanese martial art. From what I can tell in the movie, he’s teaching kung-fu… which makes sense because that’s what Chan is known for.  Nevertheless, I’ll be seeing it in the theatre. Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think.
