This could be real. Latin Review is reporting that during the press junket for Brother, Tobey Maguire was asked which director he’d like to work with next and the answer was Guillermo del Toro. Maguire also elaborated that it might be soon. Del Toro is pretty well spoken for the next decade between the two Hobbit movies and commiting to redoing the Universal monster
movies. Once he’s done filming Spider-Man 4, Maguire will be able to commit to another franchise giving the rumors that Spider-Man 5 and 6 will feature a new cast and director. While I could actually see this happening, I really don’t want it to be true. Tobey Maguire would really be good in this franchise where he could be overly dramatic like The Lord of the Rings. Problem being: hasn’t he douched-up the Spider-Man franchise enough to banish him to the “arthouse” films he loves so much? I think James McAvoy would do so much better in the role than Maguire. He’s already played in a fantasy (Chronicles of Narnia) and can display the whole range of emotions – not just sulking and surprise. Maybe this is just another rumor running its course on the interwebs. Filming isn’t set to start filing on The Hobbit until this summer, leaving plenty of time to find the right actor to portray Bilbo.
