Reviews of Green Lantern #43, Star Wars Legacy #42, Spider-Woman #3 & Dark Reign- The List: Spider-Man

Rating System: 0 to 1.5 stars = save your money unless you are just mindlessly collecting the title. 2 to 3.5 = worth a shot if you are up to trying something new or wanting to get back into a title. 4 to 5 = a must buy for any comic reader.

Spider-Woman #3SPIDER-WOMAN #3 - Brain Michael Bendis just wrote a line of script in Dark Avengers that went something like this: “I’m a patriot. Why did you join S.H.I.E.L.D.?” “Because they have the best flying cars.” That’s a lie. After seeing Viper’s flying ’67 Ford Mustang Fastback flying through the buildings in downtown Madripoor – Hydra has the best cars. Kudos to Alex Maleev for doing his research before drawing the car (I have a ’66 – so I’m biased…). Madam Hydra herself has come to break Jessica Drew out of jail after she killed a Skrull disguised as Spider-Man. Hydra has a lot invested in Jessica between her powers and training and they’ve come knocking on her door when she’s feeling her worst. Viper gets really creepy female gym teacher with Jessica as they arrive at her Madripoor base and then reveals that they have captured a Skrull, but can’t get him to talk… and then she leaves Jessica alone in the cell with him. This title represents what Brain Michael Bendis does best: intrigue, misdirection, and dialogue. If you’re looking for an action-packed, smash ‘em up: this isn’t the book for you. But, if you’re a fan of good writing, this is one of the best reads on the shelves.

Star Wars Legacy #42STAR WARS LEGACY #42 - The Jedi Council has finally decided to come out of hiding and sent a small group to join up with the Galactic Alliance Fleet led by Admiral Stazi. The Sith fleet manages to track down the Alliance because of a traitor on board Stazi’s bridge. Not only does he turn the deep space sensors off, he shoots Stazi – leaving Stazi’s new XO in charge of the entire fleet. The fleet manages to escape, only to once again be tracked down almost immediately. XO Captain Bey figures out how the Sith are tracking them and manages to turn the tables on the Sith fleet. Stazi is revealed to be hurt, but alive. Most of the Alliances victories are because of Stazi’s brilliant strategies, losing him would be catastrophic to the fleet. Another “filler” issue that is prepping us for the next Skywalker storyline – which happens to be about Cade’s father, Kol. I can’t say enough about John Ostrander’s work on this title. Month after month, he brings bits of stories from the movies, the novels and the comics into the future of the Star Wars Universe – making it new and familiar at the same time.

Dark Reign - The List Spider-ManDARK REIGN- THE LIST: SPIDER-MAN - Great. Another Adam Kubert “bait” cover from Marvel… wait… HE DREW THE INTERIORS! WOO-HOO! I tend to get a tad excited when one of the best artist in the business draws an entire issue (seriously Adam, WTF?!?). Having already dealt with everyone and everything on his “list” but one (he thinks…), Norman Osborn has decided the time has come to deal with Spider-Man. Problem for Osborn being, Spider-Man has decided to step up and deal with Osborn. Feeling that this whole situation is his fault for not dealing with Osborn previously, Spidey breaks into OsCorp to download something incriminating on Normie’s personal mainframe. As Osborn and Ms. Hand are walking to his personal lab, talking about how much fun it will be to deal with Spider-Man, Spidey’s already inside downloading. When he realizes he’s caught, Spidey yells, “Look! Naked Belgians!” and both of them turn to look behind them as Spidey crashes through the window with a “Yoinks! And Away!” The two fight it out in downtown with Osborn seemingly getting the upper hand. Just as he’s about to deliver the coup de gras to Spidey, Pete notices Osborns has changed the Iron Man armor for looks and not function and manages to create a “backfire” on the chest-plate and get away. Not only does he get away, but he ditches his Spidey suit and runs into a Cyber Café to begin uploading the files to as many people as he can (remember, after the events of “One More Day” – nobody knows who Spidey is unless he’s shown them since…). Osborn begins zapping computers to stop it from going out and then claims that Pete doctored the footage. Pete then stands up in Osborn’s face and tells him that as a taxpayer, the Iron Patriot and his Avengers work for him. It’s actually much longer and better than that, but I don’t want to give away too much of Dan Slott’s soliloquies that he wrote for Peter. The art by Adam Kubert was phenomenal as it always is and Dan Slott was amazing in this issue. Throughout the Marvel U, we can start to see the walls close in around Osborn…

Green Lantern #48GREEN LANTERN #48 - This issue takes place just prior to the events of Blackest Night #5 and shows Hal gathering the “Rainbow Rodeo” together in Sector 666. The Orange Lantern, Larfleeze agrees to help if one of the Guardians agrees to become HIS Guardian when Blackest Night is over. Sayd, one of the Blue Guardians and Ganthet’s companion, agrees to the terms to obtain his help and light. We also gain a little insight into the Red Lantern, Atrocitus. The Blue Lantern show him if he could hope again, but Atrocitus rejects his vision and agrees to help, swearing to kill the Guardians when Blackest Night is over. Once everybody is satisfied, they prepare to leave for Earth just as the Black Lantern reaches 100%… Barley anything happened in this issue and it was still one of the better issues I’ve read this month. Between making us actually feel sorry for Atrocitus and seeing the foremost members of each Lantern Corps together – Geoff Johns has officially become the best writer at DC. Every single Blackest Night crossover has made me say, “Oh, damn!” at some point. And I know he didn’t write each one, but this was his story. Even if you’re not a DC fan or a diehard Marvel Zombie – you still need to be reading Green Lantern and Blackest Night.
