Another Comic-Con is in the history books and once again, the biggest draw seems to have been the new movie projects and not the comics. Hall H was constantly packed full and Hollywood execs were all over the place gauging interest in new and existing properties; all trying to find the next big hit. Comic-Con organizers actually let fans camp outside of Hall H for the Twilight panel. Not for the Iron Man panel two years ago. Not for any of the Star Wars panels. Just frickin’ Twilight. Make a rule and stick to it. Not as many freebies this year as in years past. Guess the economy has hit everyone. I will say that it was nice having only 125,000 people per day as opposed to the 150,000 last year. Panel lines are still too unwieldy. Fans with 4-day passes should get priority seating over single-day passes or the opportunity for a panel sign-up.
The biggest surprises for me this year had to be Solomon Kane and Kick-Ass. Both of those movies will be hits and have sequels made. The biggest disappointment had to be the so-called Star Wars Spectacular or Star Wars Friday. No release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic. They pushed season two of the Clone Wars (it’s going to be grittier… oooh….) and an asinine release of SW: The Force Unleashed. It will have all the current DLC as well as a new level or two taking place after the original story. Big deal. Lucas’s big announcement was that they will be doing a Star Wars in Concert tour around the world. An orchestra will play the score to famous scenes live as the footage is shown. Anthony Daniels narrates. Wow. That’s it? That’s best you could do for the fans and the G4 telecast? This year, Lucas just hyped a turd. The best thing about the big panel on Friday was Olivia Munn’s Princess Leia costume. Had to be taped down in certain places if you ask me.
All in all, a good show. The aisles weren’t as crowded as last year, but it seemed a lot of actual comic fans had been replaced by giggling tweens and people at the Con just for the movie stuff.
Enjoy the photos and I’ll be back next year!
