Wow. I haven’t been to a movie in probably 15 years that I couldn’t find something to nitpick or complain about. There were things in The Dark Knight that I thought could be better and the same goes for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Star Trek has set the bar to a whole new height.
I’ll admit I had big reservations about J.J. Abrams and his production company handling this one. His track record with movies hasn’t been great. He absolutely nailed it with this one. The story is a typical time travel retcon that I would normally shred if it was done in a comic (Hello Marvel!). However, for a movie franchise that got its start on TV in the 1960′s, it was a must. Actors get old or tired of doing a series and they can either be written out, they can stop making the franchise or jump forward/backward in time like they did with ST:TNG or ST: Enterprise. In this reboot, Abrams has taken us back to the Starfleet Academy days of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest. But this isn’t just an origins story… Abram and the screenwriters have created an entirely new alternate timeline that leaves us just the characters and basic story ideas. They’ve left the door open to create whole new stories that aren’t based in almost fifty years of continuity. Every single casting choice was dead on and the actors themselves picked up the mannerisms of their older counterparts while still making the characters their own. Even the effects weren’t overbearing and set design update looks a million times better while staying true to the original.
I honestly have no complaints other than the hardcore trekkies need to shut up. If you want a laugh check out this bit by The Onion News Network making fun of the bashers: http://www.theonion.com/content/video/trekkies_bash_new_star_trek_film
I’m going to see the movie again tonight…
