I was more than a little leery of another Star Trek movie after the last ST: NG travesty and terrified of J.J. Abrams after the abortion called Mission Impossible III. I will preface the presiding statement by saying I can’t stand Lost and wouldn’t see his monster flick, whatever is was called. But, after seeing the newest trailer for Star Trek, I’m there for the next three movies. The story sounds good, focusing more on Kirk and Spock while having the rest of the future crew in the background. They seemed to have hit upon enough unknown back-story as they keep to the heart of Roddenberry’s original vision. I got to read the movie prequel comic from IDW that sets up and leads directly into the movie. Ok. So it’s another time travel story. But, this allows the people holding the creative reigns on the picture to reset, retool and re-imagine the original Star Trek universe to get it a little (ok – a lot…) up to date and “modern” looking. I think the thing that really hooked me and got me past the pretty people and slick effects was the bit of story that revealed that Kirk’s father was first officer of a starship and became the defacto captain when the his captain is killed in a starship battle and winds up saving the lives of 800 people. I believe this bit of story was used in a novel at some point (I had to look it up…), but I loved the angle. Plus, the fact that Pike is the current Captain of the Enterprise at the beginning of the movie and the Starfleet recruiter is just a cool way to bring it all together and up to date.
Having completed my gushing, I honestly think this movie will absolutely crush Wolverine when it opens. Wolverine looks too convoluted and Star Trek has way too big of a following. People with kids and/or grandkids want to bring them to see Star Trek on the big screen. The Wolverine movie just doesn’t seem to have the lasting coolness of The Dark Knight or Spider-Man.
Any Thoughts?
