I have a bad feeling that either Marvel or Jon Favreau has stepped in the “Batman” trap. Iron Man pushed it having that many stars (Downy, Jr., Paltrow, Daniels, Stamp…), but now that they have signed Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson – I predict trouble in paradise.
Rourke is to play an amalgamation of the Russian villains Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash, while Johansen is portraying the Black Widow. Are they both good actors? Yes to Rourke, he’s got Sin City, Kill Bill and now The Wrestler under his belt. Johansson just finished making a purposely campy film too damn campy. The Spirit was a ’40′s hero that was always tongue-in-cheek, but as she tried to keep up with Sam Jackson… well just look at the box office. When I think of the Natasha Romanov Black Widow, I think of a beautiful classical dancer with the mind of a super-spy. I don’t think of boobs and lips. If she were playing the second Black Widow (the blonde one…), I would buy it.
Here’s to hoping that Favreau can keep all of his stars in line and on the Marvel approved script, rather than giving in to power and egos for more face-time…
