What I’m Reading This Week – 03/25/09

X-Infernus #4 - Looks like Pixie is more screwed up than ever and Magik is back among the X-Men for a while. This story had some real potential, but seemed too drawn out and contrite.  I would've enjoyed it more if this story took place in an actual X-Title as a two issue arc rather than the four. I will say that the penciller, Giuseppe Camuncoli, should have a decent future as an artist. X-Force/Cable: Messiah War Chapter 1 - Wooo... leading directly out of Cable # and X-Force #13, this book...

What I’m Reading This Week – 03/18/09

Dark Avengers #3 - Holy Crap! Bendis is writing his opus with this book. The characterizations of Osborn and The Sentry were fascinating and the fight between the Dark Avengers and Morgana Le Fay was over-the-top. And now Doom will owe a favor to Osborn. Which makes me wonder if he didn't have the whole thing planned to begin with... Uncanny X-Men #507 - Since Matt Fraction and Terry Dodson have taken over this book; I have to admit that it's been a little slow for an X-Men title. While the a...

Always Bring Your Umbrella…

If Gerard Way isn't careful, he might become better known as a comic writer rather than the front-man for My Chemical Romance. Along with artist Gabriel Ba, Way has made The Umbrella Academy from Dark Horse Comics into a cult hit. Currently four issues into the second mini-series, Dallas, The Umbrella Academy focuses on a group of orphans (now grown) that were raised by a man that turned out to be an alien. Having chosen these children because of their potential for powers or otherwise, he t...

Don’t Hate on the Black & White Comics…

So it's a full color world - TV's, eyesight, etc. But, if you aren't on the lookout for some black and white gems, you just might miss something really cool. Take Terry Moore's Echo; clean, gorgeous art and a great story. For anyone who misses his Strangers in Paradise comic, this will only remind you of his art and writing style. This is new subject matter for him - yes, I know he's writing Runaways for Marvel - Echo is his take on superpowers and superheroes with an even more human angl...

Megan Fox Must Love Fanboys…

For anybody who hasn't heard yet, Megan (Transformers II) Fox has signed on to produce and star in Michael Turner's Fathom. If you haven't read the comic yet, Megan Fox looks as if she was born to play Aspen Matthews; a bronzed-skinned, beach girl with water-based superpowers. And it doesn't hurt that she looks good in a bikini... It's really a shame that Turner didn't live long enough to see his favorite creation on the big screen, but you have to wonder if the media coverage of his deat...

Astonishing X-Men

The Astonishing X-Men book from Marvel is a great read if you can get past the slightly out of continuity storylines and the constant lateness of the title. I can't blame Warren Ellis too much. Marvel let Joss Weadon do whatever he wanted to do. Yes, thank you Joss for bringing back Colossus. It was a mistake killing him (I'm talkin' to you Bob Harras!) and he, along with Nightcrawler, is the conscience of the team. And I'm glad that Ellis brought back Storm, much like Colossus, she is an X-...

Cap-Bucky or Enough of the Shock Treament Already!

When I started reading comics, the one constant that could be counted among death and taxes was this: Bucky is the only hero that every truly stays dead. Then Ed Brubaker brought him back as the Winter Soldier before the Marvel Civil War started. Being a longtime Cap fan (of the character, not the crappy stories that seemed to accompany him until Brubaker...), I'll admit, I was skeptical. But, he actually wrote a great story that not only introduced the reader to a new character, but also de...
